Day 27: Marriage Preparation Course

I found this and added it, if you know Mark it is very literally the opposite!  But it came up under marriage symbolism in google!
So Mark and I are gearing up to teach the marriage prep course this coming fall.  And we are so blessed to be able to shadow the current couples that teach. We shadowed this winter and had a blast and so are very happy to be contributing and helping out with this one.

At first I had issues about "teaching" a course about something that I had only done for about 5 years (6 this summer), but what the current leader told me was "well that's 5 more years than them!" I liked that, because it's true.  We aren't experts, but we just facilitate and are able to provided real 'life" examples of some of the issues discussed.

But by far the best part of the weekend is that, we get to be together and talk about our marriage and us!  Sans-enfant! (kid free)  It's like a 2 day date!  Sure it's not intimate but it's so meaningful, and it helps us remember why we got married in the first place.  We kind of renew our commitment to each other, because at the end of the day.  We come first (marriage first), kids next and everything else comes after that.  And what I truly look forward to is having that special time with just Mark once a year for as many years as we want!

  1. I'm interested to know what exactly is taught in a marriage prep course.

The wedding night without taking the course: "I'm supposed to put what where?!!!"

The wedding night after taking the course: "Hmmmn.. It looked a lot bigger on the slide."

  2. har har.
We go through the practical stuff that any couple would benefit from. Even Mark and I learn and re-learn stuff.

    - family of origin (what do each of you bring to the table)
    - communication (effective methods and conflict resolution)
    - what are the key elements that make a successful relationship
    -finances
    -sexual empowerment (natural family planning)
    - children and marriage

Mark and I would just be facilitator's using the church book! But the best part is a weekend just for us, to remember to put our marriage before anything else. (even before the kids :D)
